Government’s move

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) deferred the stringent EV battery standards (AIS-156 and AIS-038) that were drawn up after several electric vehicles caught fire because of battery malfunction. In the past six months, the country has witnessed several electric two-wheelers getting engulfed in fire. Not to forget, in some cases, owners and people in the vicinity suffered injuries.

EV industry’s voice

Dr Akshay Singhal, Founder and CEO of Log9 Materials, said that the government’s decision to pause the implementation of stringent EV battery standards and the rolling out of those standards in phases is welcomed by the EV industry. “This move will ensure adequate diligence is done before the revived generation of batteries arrives to the Indian consumers,” he added.

Kalyan C. Korimerla, Managing Director, Etrio highlighted that the government’s strategic decision will not only allow EV battery makers to redesign their batteries more safely but will also enable certification agencies to prepare for the upcoming testing mandates.

“At the same time, vehicle OEMs now have enough time to introduce vehicles using these new batteries into the market in a safe manner and to get their vehicles re-certified,” added Korimerla.
