One of the flagship projects of the former Narendra Modi government in Gujarat, Kanya Kelavni Nidhi, to improve girl child education in the state, is due to be converted in to a public trust. This will open it up to get grants from the Central and State government, loans, besides corporate and private donations.
The scheme was launched in 2003, by Modi, after assessment of problems related to girls’ education like high dropout rates in school.
The Gujarat government is also preparing a detailed presentation before the HRD Ministry on Kanya Kelavni in order to evaluate the feasibility of its countrywide replication.
